Several communities in Langtang South Local Council of Plateau State were on Monday night ravaged by floods, which destroyed their property and left many displaced.

The Guardian learnt that the flood affected 13 communities, submerging about 220 houses and several farms.

It was further gathered that some bridges leading to some communities were destroyed.

Residents of the affected communities said the flood was caused by heavy rainfall which lasted several hours.

A resident of Mabudi, Emmanuel Nanpak,  said property worth millions of Naira were destroyed, while several homes were submerged in Mabudi, Lashel ,Turaki, Gehetu, Karkasi Magama amongst several other communities.

Nanpak, who claimed to have lost all his life- savings solicited for governments’ assistance.

Another resident, Godwin Nanyah said the disaster signalled an impending hunger in the locality, because several major farmers were affected.

Chairman of Langtang South  Council, Vincent Venman Bulus, on his Facebook page, said: “It is sad to hear about the flood that swept Mabudi community of Langtang South, which resulted in the destruction of property worth millions of Naira.

“I sympathise with the victims and the entire Mabudi community. It has become necessary for communities, individuals and authorities to take proactive measures.”

Bulus stressed the need for people to believe that prevention is better and cheaper than cure, as well as take climate change issues more seriously.
